Services
What does a General Surgeon treat? In many
ways, “general” is somewhat of a misnomer.
A General Surgeon is a specialist with expertise in
the evaluation and treatment of patients with illnesses
or conditions involving a wide range of systems and
anatomic regions.
A General surgeon’s education involves at least
a 5-year residency, after completion of undergraduate
and medical school training. They are experts in surgery
of the abdominal cavity, trauma care, and cancer care.
The following are some of the most common services that
Petoskey Surgeons offer:
- Evaluation of breast abnormalities such as breast
lumps, abnormal mammograms, and nipple discharge.
- Hernias of the abdominal wall, such as inguinal,
umbilical, and incisional hernias.
- Evaluation of abdominal pain and its numerous causes,
such as appendicitis, diverticulitis, cholecystitis,
etc.
- Surgery of the gallbladder and biliary tree, such
as to treat symptomatic gallstones or acute cholecystitis.
- Vascular surgery, which includes the treatment of
occlusive disease (plaque blockage) of the carotid,
subclavian, kidney, intestinal, abdominal aorta, and
leg arteries, as well as treatment of aneurysm disease.
Treatment options include surgical bypass, as well
as endovascular options (angioplasty and stent).
- Treatment of venous diseases, varicose veins, and
vena cava filter placement.
- Vascular Ultrasound and non-invasive testing.(NIVA
lab)
- Laparoscopic surgery (minimally invasive surgery),
such as cholecystectomy, appendectomy, Nissen fundoplication
for heartburn, colectomy, colostomy closure, hernia,
splenectomy, cancer staging, diagnostic laparoscopy, adrenalectomy and distal pancreatectomy.
- Flexible endoscopy, both diagnostic and screening,
including esophagogastroduodenoscopy, gastrostomy
placement, and colonoscopy.
- Minimally invasive breast and thyroid image-guided
biopsy, such as fine-needle biopsy and core-needle
biopsy.
- Endocrine surgery to treat conditions of the thyroid
(nodules, hyperthyroidism), parathyroid glands, and
adrenal glands.
- Surgery of the alimentary tract, to treat Crohn’s
disease, bowel obstruction, diverticular disease,
peptic ulcer disease.
- Dialysis access.
- Trauma care, including the management of the patient
with multiple injuries.
- Surgical critical care.
- Perianal disorders, hemorrhoids, fissure, fistula, abscess.
- Pediatric surgery - surgical care of children - appendix, pyloric stenosis, bowel obstruction, hernia.
Cancer Care
We offer surgical oncological care in multiple areas,
including:
- Breast cancer (minimally invasive diagnostic biopsy,
lumpectomy, mastectomy, sentinel node biopsy, axillary
dissection.) The great majority of patients are treated
without need for mastectomy. If mastectomy is required
there are options available for immediate reconstruction.
- Thyroid cancer.
- Distal esophagus cancer, Barrett’s esophagitis,
and esophagectomy without thoracotomy.
- Stomach cancer.
- Pancreas, bile duct, and liver cancer.
- Cancer of the colon, rectum, anus, and small bowel
- Skin cancers, such as melanoma, basal cell, and
squamous cell carcinoma.
- Sentinel lymph node biopsy techniques for breast
cancer and melanoma (allowing for removal of only
one or two lymph nodes to stage such malignancies).
- Mediport placement and venous access for chemotherapy
administration.
Minor Surgery
We also offer minor office-based surgery under local
anesthesia, occasionally supplemented by oral sedatives.
Some of the most common procedures we can perform in
the office setting include: skin lesion, lipoma, or
cyst removal, temporal artery biopsy, nerve biopsy,
muscle biopsy, mediport removal, hemorrhoid banding,
and abscess drainage.
