J. Rynbrandt, M.D., F.A.C.S.
Dr.
Rynbrandt grew up in southwestern lower Michigan and
attended Hope College graduating with honors. He graduated
from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1981,
and stayed in Ann Arbor for an additional five years
completing a general surgery residency at St. Joseph
Mercy Hospital. Prior to residency, he was awarded a
Reader’s Digest International Fellowship completing
a three-month work-study program in southern India.
Two of his three children were born in Ann Arbor.
Following completion of training, he joined the staff
at Blodgett Memorial Medical Center and St. Mary’s
Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan for three years.
Opportunities at the Burn’s Clinic in Petoskey
and the chance to live in beautiful northern Michigan
drew him to Petoskey in 1989, where he has remained
since then.
Dr. Rynbrandt was instrumental in managing the cancer
program at Northern Michigan Hospital. Organizations
in which he holds memberships include the Society of
American Gastrointestinal Surgeons, the American College
of Surgeons, and the Frederick A. Coller Surgical Society.
He is a diplomat of the American Board of Surgery recently
recertified in 2005. He is the former Chief of Staff
of Northern Michigan Hospital, and now serves on the
hospital Board of Trustees.
In the early 1990s Dr. Rynbrandt was responsible for
developing laparoscopic general surgery in Petoskey.
This included laparoscopic surgery for gallbladders,
hernias, appendix, and colon surgery. He has developed
an expertise in breast surgery as well.
He lives locally with his wife, Beth, and youngest
child, Sarah. He enjoys being outdoors in northern Michigan
sailing, skiing, and bicycling.
